Do we really need feminine washes?

Do we really need feminine washes?

If the vagina is self-cleaning, why would I need an intimate wash?

There’s a growing conversation around the idea that women have been made to feel they need perfumed products, harsh soaps, or complicated “feminine hygiene” routines to be clean. We understand why many women feel frustrated by that messaging.

At YES, we believe intimate care should never be about shame, masking natural scent, or making women feel like their bodies are a problem to fix. The vagina is incredibly clever. It is designed to clean itself naturally, and healthy vaginas do not need internal washing or douching.

As we make YES CLEANSE, our intimate foam wash, we think it’s important to be very clear about why we created it, what it is designed for, and how it fits into a healthy intimate care routine.

Why did we create YES CLEANSE?

YES CLEANSE was one of the most requested products from our customers. Many women told us they preferred using more than just water to wash with, but struggled to find products that felt genuinely gentle and suitable for intimate skin.

Too often, intimate washes contain fragrances, harsh detergents, glycerine, or ingredients that can leave delicate tissue feeling dry, irritated, or uncomfortable. Others are heavily perfumed or marketed in ways that imply vaginas should smell like flowers, which simply is not true.

So we created a certified organic intimate foam wash specifically designed for the vulva and external intimate tissue.

Like the rest of the YES range, YES CLEANSE was carefully formulated to support intimate health rather than disrupt it. It is pH matched, hormone free, and made with organic ingredients selected to minimise the risk of irritation and allergies. It cleanses gently without stripping the skin or disturbing the natural balance of the intimate area.

The vagina and the vulva are not the same thing

One of the biggest misconceptions in intimate care is using the word “vagina” to describe the entire intimate area.

The vagina is the internal muscular canal inside the body. It maintains its own balance naturally through healthy bacteria and vaginal secretions. Washing internally can disrupt this delicate environment and may contribute to dryness, irritation, odour, or infections, particularly when using soaps or perfumed products.

The vulva, however, is the external intimate area. This includes the labia, clitoris, vaginal opening, and surrounding skin. Like the rest of your skin, the vulva can collect sweat, urine, menstrual blood, discharge, and bacteria throughout the day.

YES CLEANSE is not designed for internal vaginal use. It is formulated specifically for the vulva and labia to help cleanse the external intimate area gently and comfortably.

Why might someone choose to use more than water?

For many women, washing with water alone feels completely right. For others, there are moments when using a gentle intimate wash feels more comfortable or supportive.

This might include:

  • After exercise or sweating
  • During periods
  • After sex
  • During menopause or hormonal changes
  • When experiencing dryness or sensitivity
  • While managing conditions affecting vulval skin, such as Lichen Sclerosus
  • When dealing with bladder leaks or irritation
  • Simply because they prefer using something specifically designed for intimate skin

The important thing is not whether someone chooses to use an intimate wash or not. It is choosing products that respect the delicate nature of intimate tissue if they do.

What makes YES CLEANSE different?

YES CLEANSE was formulated specifically for sensitive vulval skin and changing bodies. It is designed to cleanse without drying, sting-free and without leaving residue behind.

Some of the features women tell us matter most include:

pH matched to intimate tissue

The vulval and vaginal environment has its own delicate balance. YES CLEANSE is pH matched to help support the natural microbiome rather than disrupt it.

Specifically designed for external intimate tissue

YES CLEANSE is formulated for the vulva and labia only, not for internal vaginal use.

Gentle cleansing without harsh ingredients

It washes away odour-causing bacteria while remaining gentle on sensitive skin. It is free from glycerine, glycols, parabens, harsh detergents, and unnecessary irritants.

Certified organic ingredients

Every ingredient is selected with intimate tissue in mind. The certified organic formulation reflects our commitment to ingredient quality, transparency, and skin safety.

Suitable throughout different life stages

YES CLEANSE is hormone and oestrogen free, making it suitable during menopause, alongside medical treatments, and at every life stage.

Available in unfragranced or rose

For women who prefer no scent at all, there is an unfragranced option. YES CLEANSE Rose contains only a tiny amount of certified organic Rosa Damascena flower oil for a light natural scent.

Intimate care should support your body, not fight against it

At YES, we believe women deserve intimate care that feels thoughtful, informed, and genuinely supportive. Not products that rely on embarrassment or imply intimate skin needs to be masked or “fixed”.

For some women, water alone is enough. For others, a gentle vulva-specific wash helps them feel fresher and more comfortable throughout the day. Both are completely valid.
