Organic September

So you’ve said goodbye to August along with its fond summer memories, and you’re welcoming in September with an unbearably awkward handshake. We can sympathise. However, unlike our traditional autumnal weather, we would like to remind you that not everything is submerged under a cold, grey cloud of doom. After all, this September marks ‘Organic September’, so we’re raising the profile of all things organic in the UK; it’s time to understand the benefits of the big O, and for once, no, we’re not referring to orgasms!

Soil Association Organic September

What are the advantages of investing in organic?

By going organic, not only are you benefitting your own health, but you are also improving the lives of those surrounding you, not to mention the environment. In terms of both skincare and food products, opting for organic means that you are avoiding any questionable chemicals that can be found in non-organic produce. When it comes to intimate products and considering the delicacy of the intimate tissues, you can be sure that our Soil Association Certified products are the most natural available and are free from any harmful, synthetic nasties.

On top of your personal health benefits, going organic means that you are:

  • Reducing pollution – Agricultural fertilisers and pesticides contaminate and destroy the fertility of our farmland and even enter and pollute our water supplies. Certified organic products avoid the use of pesticides.
  • Protecting and maintaining our eco-systems – When we appreciate and care for the wellbeing of our farmland, we’re encouraging eco-sustenance, so that all forms of wildlife can live harmoniously alongside us, and fulfil their role in ecology. Again, this is only achievable when ditching the man-made chemicals and pesticides.
  • Helping prevent climate change – Organic farming stores higher levels of carbon in our soil, and doesn’t rely on oil-based pesticides when faced with resilient conditions. According to the Soil Association, if organic was a common practice in the UK, we could offset at least 23% of agriculture's current greenhouse emissions.

Be aware of ‘Greenwashing’

In recent times, the term ‘organic’ has been thrown around more and more loosely. The primary cause of this is the ever-growing trend amongst global consumers of shopping ethically, and taking a stand against corporations who care not about their eco-footprint, but profit margins. The practice of falsely claiming natural and organic status is known as ‘Greenwashing’. The Soil Association’s ‘Come Clean About Beauty’ campaign in 2018 “scores brands according to the number of unpermitted ingredients they use”, as well as ranking “the prominence of the organic claims and the availability of the product”. The campaign’s core objective is to offer transparency to consumers, and to highlight misleading beauty labels. Some of the results were truly shocking, with certain supposedly organic products posing more health risks than benefits. Check the label people! A Soil Association logo is a guarantee that the product you’re purchasing is certified organic.

So, what’s the harm in at least trying organic this September? We’re confident you’ll be glad you did…
